Principal Responsibilities:

Summary Statement: The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) performs occupational therapy treatments under the clinical supervision of the Occupational Therapist. The COTA participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team providing support and information within the area of Occupational Therapy.

• Provide Occupational Therapy treatments to patients according to treatment plans developed by the Occupational Therapist
• Assist the Occupational Therapist when performing tests, evaluations, and complex treatment procedures
• Observe, record, and report to the Occupational Therapist the patient conditions reactions and responses related to treatment
• Maintain daily records of treatments and document progress notes on patients as directed by the Occupational Therapist
• Assist the Occupational Therapist in consulting with family members, physicians and other health care professionals as appropriate
• Assist with the care of the Occupational Therapy department and equipment
• Assist the Occupational Therapist with in-service programs and other meetings as assigned by the Occupational Therapist
• Access continuing education opportunities appropriate to discipline and responsibilities in order to maintain clinical competency
• Attend and participate in staff meetings and other meetings as requested
• This position must continually meet the productivity objective of 85%. PRN Home Health and Therapy reserves the right to adjust each individual employee’s productivity objective independently based upon said employee’s specific facility responsibilities
• Act in compliance with PRN Therapy Management Policies and Procedures, State, Federal and Professional Organization regulatory standards and guidelines
• Perform other duties as assigned
• This position is considered nonexempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act
• The duties of this position may include operating on a Saturday through Friday work week

Supporting Responsibilities:

Summary Statement: It is expected that the incumbent has a genuine appreciation for the understanding of protocol, discretion and professionalism, is able to accept and assume responsibility, and has the ability to interpret and make decision in accordance with prescribed procedures and practices of the organization. In order to provide effective and efficient services it is necessary that the incumbent be self-motivated, respectful, tactful and highly organized.

• PRN Home Health and Therapy personnel will strive to provide the resident/patient with the highest quality of rehabilitation on a consistent basis.
• Diplomatic relationships will be maintained with all levels of facility and rehabilitation staff to create a strong interdisciplinary focus. Participate in facility activities whenever possible. A name tag will be worn at all times. The regulations the facility has established for their staff will be followed. Remember we are guests in their facility.
• Programs will be developed to enhance the quality of the services provided in the facility. Program development is anticipated to occupy non-productive time. If your facility has a special need, you are encouraged to develop a program. Please communicate your ideas with your supervisor.
• PRN Home Health and Therapy staff will enhance the facilities services by freely offering information for Restorative and Nursing personnel so to maintain patients newly achieved levels of function, achieved through therapy.
• In-services will be provided to educate the facility staff on how your discipline can improve the quality of care, ease the work of the facility staff and promote the recovery process of the patient.
• PRN Home Health and Therapy staff will attend various meetings in the facility in which they work. It is anticipated they will attend a weekly Medicare meeting, patient staffings and facility department head meetings (where applicable).
• Completion of all documentation, billing, and reporting are to be accurate and timely. This includes response to physician orders, prompt evaluation, daily recording of treatment and billing information, progress notes, summaries, functional maintenance programs and updates as well as monthly billing information and keeping up to date with screenings and care plans.
• Communicate with the facility regarding your schedule. Post a schedule in the facility as to your patient case load.
• Call the PRN Home Health and Therapy office immediately to report any injury, incident or other difficulty impacting you, your peers, the facility or the residents treated by you.
• Confidentiality is to be maintained regarding patient privacy issues. Follow all aspects of the Residents Bill of Rights. A copy of this Bill of Rights is included in the PRN Home Health and Therapy manual.
• Maintain the confidentiality of all verbal, written, electronic, augmentative, and non- verbal communications, including compliance with HIPAA regulations.
• The image of PRN Home Health and Therapy comes from its employees. Recognize that you are the reputation of PRN Home Health and Therapy, Inc.
• Universal precautions and standards for health are carefully followed for both residents and staff protection. Attend body substance isolation in-services in your facility annually.
• Verify all PRN Home Health and Therapy required vaccinations are up to date and reported to the corporate office.

Education Requirements:

• Graduate of an approved Occupational Therapist Assistant program
• Current license/certification in Wisconsin
• Recent graduates are welcome
• Current American Heart Association CPR Certification

Training, Skills, Knowledge and/or Experience:

• Ability to understand and follow the directions of the Occupational Therapist and the policies and procedures of PRN THERAPY
• Current registration with the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy.
• Prefer active membership in the American Occupational Therapy Association and Wisconsin Occupational Therapy Association
• Demonstrated competency in applying principles, methods, materials and equipment used in physical therapy
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills
• Knowledge of accreditation standards and compliance requirements
• Ability to work an 8 hour shift and to walk, bend, drive, stand, sit and reach constantly during that shift
• Ability to push wheeled equipment throughout the facility
• Ability to participate in sustained activity for up to 3 ½ hours at a time

Working Conditions: Typical long-term care environment. Requires ability to work occasional weekends. Strong organizational skills in order to effectively maintain multiple projects simultaneously. Requires creativity as well as the ability to work independently. Ability to be discreet and maintain confidential information.
